Using a Solar cover is pretty straight forward. The more you use it the more you'll save, and the better your swimming and leisure experience. To that end, SolarCoversCanada.com recommends the following guidelines for using your Solar cover:
Daytime usage: Install the solar cover when the pool is not in use on those days that are breezy to windy, and have a dry heat. Evaporation of your pool water is a certainty on these types of days. Do not install your Solar cover on those days that are sticky-hot or humid, usually when the wind is calm and less airy. Let the darker colour of your pool liner/floor attract the sun's rays and do the warming from within. You'll find that the deeper areas of your pool will heat up faster this way. On semi-overcast and all-cloudy days, install the Solar cover, as the cooler air associated with such days will tend to evaporate your pool water and also reduce the water temperature if not covered.
Nighttime Usage: Install the Solar cover in order to prevent heat loss from the cooler night air, and to prevent evaporation if the temperature falls below the dew point.
Exceptions: Rainy days are the exception. Whenever you experience large amounts of rain, it is best to remove your Solar cover in order to allow the proper interaction of your pools' chemistry to work at the water surface. Having your Solar cover impede this process will not only diminish the chemicals' effectiveness, but will also cause the Solar cover to be part of that reaction, which will certainly effect the structure and life of your Solar cover.
